Learn about the Lemon Law, Find a Lawyer in Michigan

by | Jul 26, 2018 | Legal Services

Every state has a Lemon Law, which ensures that you don’t get stuck with a vehicle that requires multiple repairs or can’t be driven at all for extended periods. Michigan is no different, which is why it can help to learn more about these laws and how they apply to you. If you do happen to purchase a vehicle that falls under the lemon category, you have the right to hire an attorney and get restitution.

No Used Vehicles

Many such laws do protect people who purchase used vehicles, but not the lemon law in Michigan. It only applies to new vehicles that include SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, and passenger cars. Even if you lease or purchase them outside the state, you are still covered if you are a resident of the state. However, now all new vehicles are considered under the law, such as motor homes, off-road vehicles, motorcycles or large trucks.

Returns

Most people confuse this law with the three-day purchase rescind, which isn’t a law. Under the lemon laws, you have the right to receive a refund of the lease or purchase price after returning your vehicle to the location where it was purchased. However, this doesn’t apply until your car has had multiple repairs to try and fix the issue.

How to Get Restitution

In most cases, you just have to show proof that you have tried to fix the vehicle and that the repairs have failed. However, some car lots may not want to acknowledge that they sold you a defective car, so it can be helpful to hire a lawyer.
